Abstract

Background: The age of elementary school children is one of the important stages in the human life cycle.
Snack food consumption in children has a significant contribution to the fulfillment of energy and nutrients.
The habit of consuming unhealthy snack foods will have an adverse impact on children's health, including
being susceptible to disease, the growth and development of children is not optimal, and the decline in
children's learning achievement. The behavior of washing hands is one of the good habits that is easy to do
and if practiced correctly will have a good impact on health. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to
determine the impact of hand washing education and healthy snacks on knowledge, attitudes and practices.
Methods: The design used in this research is a quasi-experimental design. The intervention was carried out
for students in grade 5 at SDN Mulyoagung 2. Data was collected using a questionnaire. Education on hand
washing and healthy snacks using video media, comics and posters. Results: The results showed that there
was a significant increase in children's knowledge about hand washing after the intervention (p <0.05) but
there was no significant difference in children's knowledge about healthy snacks (p >0.05). Conclusions: The
researcher can conclude that this nutrition education intervention only has a significant effect on knowledge,
but not on attitudes and practices. This is due to the short duration and frequency and the media which do not
include audiovisual.
