Abstract

Background: Stunted adolescents have very low fat oxidation, therefore the risk of obesity is higher compared to non-stunted adolescents. Obesity is associated with oxidative stress, which can be controlled by antioxidants, including albumin. Low serum albumin levels in stunted and obesity subject. The aim of the study was to determine differences serum albumin levels in obese adolescents with a stunted background.

Method: This study is a cross sectional study. The research subjects were adolescents 17-19 years old and used random sampling technique. Stunted was determined by z-score Height/Age <-2 SD and obesity with WHtR, males ≥ 0.51 cm and females ≥ 0.50 cm. Serum albumin levels were tested by the Bromocresol Green (BCG) method. One way ANOVA test was conducted to determine differences in serum albumin levels in each group.

Result: Serum albumin level in the stunted-obesity group was 4.61±0.24 mg/dL, stunted-non obesity was 4.58±0.23 mg/dL, non stunted-obesity was 4.59±0.19 mg/dL, and non-stunted non-obesity is 4.75 ± 0.20 mg/dL. There are significant differences in serum albumin levels in each group (p = 0,031)

Conclusion: Serum albumin levels in adolescents with stunted background, obese, and stunted-obesity are in normal category, but lower than the non-stuted-non obesity group.
